How much does a home EV charger cost to install?

Typically €899 to €1,595 for the charger and a standard fit, most often about €1,249, or €599 to €1,295 after the €300 SEAI grant. An older fuse board or a long cable run adds to it.

How long does installation take?

2 to 4 hours on the day for a standard job, in one visit. From first quote to charging usually takes 2 to 6 weeks, mostly waiting for the SEAI Letter of Offer.

Is there much mess?

Very little: a small hole through the wall for the cable, a surface-mounted cable run and the charger on the wall. Trenching to a garage is the messy exception.

What guarantee do I get?

Ask for it in writing before you sign: the maker's warranty on the charger, what the installer stands over on the fitting, and the Safe Electric certificate when it's done.

Do I qualify for the €300 SEAI grant?

If the home has a private off-street parking space, the charger is on SEAI's Smart Charger Register and a Safe Electric registered electrician fits it. Apply first: no work before your Letter of Offer.

Will my fuse board need an upgrade?

Only if it has no spare way or no RCD protection, which older homes often don't. Expect €200 to €650. SEAI doesn't fund wiring upgrades.

Tethered or untethered?

Tethered has the cable fixed on and usually costs about €100 more. Untethered is a socket, and you use the cable that came with your car.

Will it pay for itself?

Charging at home on a night rate costs far less per kWh than public fast charging, so a charger you use most nights earns its keep on the running cost of the car.

Who comes out to fit it?

A Safe Electric registered electrical contractor who covers your area. You get their name and registration number before anyone visits.
